take note

The current issue of Cloth Paper Scissors has an article on making journal folders using a file folder as the base, and I thought this would make a good place to keep field notes taken on walks with a local naturalist group.

I’ve added patterned papers, rub-ons, tissue tape, stamping, fabric and machine-stitching to my folder, creating four pockets in which to hold journal cards. The overall result is sturdy but not too bulky; perfect for tucking in a day pack to take in the field.

These photos show the inside of my folder, with the cards removed. 7Gypsies Conservatory papers supplied many images appropriate to my theme, collaged on top of other 7 Gypsies patterned papers. Alcohol inks are vibrant when applied to Tim Holtz’ tissue tape, seen along the edges.
Another layer adding depth without bulk is achieved with the application of several rub-ons, again in a natural theme. With the cards and tags included, my journal looks like this.
Given the narrow confines of the stitched pockets and my propensity to write a lot, I opted to include a couple of folded cards for longer notes. Also included are a quote, and my contact info on the back of a small tag, should I be foolish enough to lose my journal in my travels.

Here’s a roundup of my cards and tags, both front and back. I had fun shopping my stash for these pieces: papers by Prima, SU & Scenic Route, Jeni Bowlin note cards, Crafty Secrets journal notes, DCWV vellum quote, and a LYB journal sticker. Glimmer mist and a few coordinating rub-ons tie them in to the design of the folder. And finally, the back of my journal cover.

Now that it’s finished, I’m really looking forward to documenting the flora and fauna I see when out on guided nature walks.
